His transfer has been in the air for several weeks and has been confirmed on Monday morning. Cyclist Wilco Kelderman will ride for Bora-Hansgrohe, the team of Peter Sagan and others, for the next two years.
Kelderman comes over from Sunweb, where he has been racing since 2017. Before that, the general classification rider competed for Lotto-Jumbo and the predecessor and training teams of the team, which nowadays goes through life as Jumbo-Visma.
“I’m really looking forward to this new challenge,” said 29-year old Kelderman. “I quickly gained confidence that I can find a new boost for my career at Bora. This is exactly the right step for me.”
At Bora Kelderman will meet Sagan as well as Emanuel Buchmann, who finished fourth in the Tour last year, and sprinter Pascal Ackerman.
Chasing Matthews and Oomen
That Kelderman would leave Sunweb was already clear for a long time. He’s not the only rider by name to leave the team after this year, also Sam Oomen (Jumbo-Visma) and Michael Matthews (Mitchelton-Scott) are looking for salvation somewhere else in 2021.
Kelderman’s talent is beyond dispute in the world of cycling. Nevertheless, his performance has been disappointing in recent years, regularly due to crashes. His best performance in a big round is fourth place in the Tour of Spain in 2017. Last year he finished seventh in the Vuelta.
This season Kelderman focuses on the Tour of Italy, which starts on 3 October.
