Sofia Kenin easily qualified for the third round of the US Open. The American tennis star is now one of the favourites in the heavily depleted field and is living up to expectations for the time being. She also left Leylah Fernandez without a chance.
Without getting a break point against, 21-year-old Kenin settled in two sets with Fernandez (6-4, 6-3). The winner of the last Australian Open now meets Ons Jabeur.
Striking was the victory of Tsvetana Pironkova, who returned to the circuit after three years and now beat tenth-seeded Garbine Muguruza (7-5, 6-3).
In 2017 Pironkova put an end to her active career and got a son a year later. The almost 33-year-old Bulgarian now takes advantage of her protected status to return to the top of the podium during her comeback. And with success.
Muguruza, in turn, is not the first to die early in the tournament. On Wednesday the first seeded Karolína Plísková dropped out.
