Kieft: Subtopper Memphis doesnt make it to the top players

Wim Kieft thinks Memphis Depay is a subtopper as a striker. The FC Barcelona forward climbs steadily on the all-time top scoring list of the Dutch team, but that gives a distorted picture. That says the former striker in his column in De Cceit.
Memphis is currently shared sixth with 35 goals, as much as Faas Wilkes and Ruud van Nistelrooy. Robin van Persie is the all-time top scorer with fifty hits. According to Kieft, however, he does not reach the greats of the past. ‘A lot of Depay’s goals in the Dutch team are against small countries‘, he writes. โ€œEven in the 2019 Nations League Final Four against England and Portugal, he did not score for Orange.โ€
Kieft acknowledges Memphis’
s value for Orange, but argues that it is currently lacking big and decisive moments on the 27-year-old attacker‘s resume. ‘The big ones are asserting themselves in difficult conditions and dragtheir teams to the next level. There‘s a bit of the crux there too. Depay is more of an individualist than a team player. He can’t always do something about it himself, but it‘s reality.โ€
Memphis plays at a top European club, but FC Barcelona only came out with the former PSV thanks to coach Ronald Koeman and the financial problems of the former PSV, says Kieft. โ€œInternationally, you have to place Depay in the line of subtoppers. Let Ronaldo and Messi aside for a moment; Depay does not reach the level of current top players such as Karim Benzema, Romelu Lukaku, Mohamed Salah, Robert Lewandowski or Sadio Manรฉ. ‘
