U.S. President Joe Biden also takes place in Brussels, between NATO and EU summits, also audiences with King Philip. It is the second royal visit he makes on his first foreign trip as president, after having been on tea with British Queen Elizabeth with his wife Jill on Sunday.
Jill didn‘t come to the King of Belgians on Tuesday, because the first lady has already returned home. However, Biden is accompanied by his Foreign Minister Antony Blinken. Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and his own Foreign Minister Sophie Wilmès are also present. The visit will be on the agenda for 11 am to 12 noon.
Joe and Filip met before. That was in 2011 when Filip was Crown Prince and Biden vice president under Barack Obama. At the time Prince Filip visited the White House with his wife Mathilde as part of a major Belgian trade mission to the US. The story goes that Filip preferred to meet Obama, but the protocol did not allow that because Filip wasn’t a head of state or government yet.
After Philip became king in 2013, Queen Mathilde and himself met Obama, including when he was in Brussels in 2014. The royal couple also received Donald Trump and his wife Melania in the palace in 2017.
