Chess topper Magnus Carlsen is known as a great football fan and a fan of Real Madrid. His favourite Dutch player in the shirt of the Spanish top club? “Arjen Robben, Rafael van der Vaart and Wesley Sneijder did well, but I always like to watch Klaas-Jan Huntelaar”, he says about the striker that was worth gold for Ajax against FC Twente on Thursday as a substitute with two late goals.
“ Not that he had his very best time at Real Madrid, but I think he is a very interesting player. He looks tireless and still plays an important role at Ajax. In recent years they have unfortunately sold their best players in Amsterdam and new talents have replaced them. Huntelaar can accompany young players like Antony and Traoré like no other. I think hes a very good mentor.”
Carlsen has a warm heart to Ajax anyway. He visited several matches of the Amsterdam club. His most memorable was the heenduel of the eighth finals of the Champions League in 2019 with Real Madrid at the Johan Cruijff ArenA. Ajax lost by 1-2, but a few weeks later he was master and master in Santiago Bernabeu and took out De Koninklijke.
“ I remember that I was happy with the result in Amsterdam, but it was already clear that Ajax was the better team at that time. After they defeated Madrid, I also gave them that fantastic cup. My heart broke when they were taken out in the semifinals by Tottenham. So sour,” says Carlsen.
Carlsen arrives in Wijk aan Zee on Friday for the Tata Steel chess tournament. The best chess player in the world participates for seventeenth time and was only thirteen years old when he gave the act for the first time. Click on the link below for an interview with chess topper Carlsen.
