Ronald Koeman has appointed his captains at FC Barcelona. Lionel Messi also carries the band under the Dutch coach, while Sergio Busquets, Gerard Piqué and Sergi Roberto remain the reserve captains, as the Catalans will announce on Saturday, ahead of the first practice match of the new season against Gimnàstic de Tarragona. For a long time Messi seemed to be heading for a departure from Camp Nou, but the Argentine superstar is going to finish his contract with the club anyway. Since the departure of Andrés Iniesta in 2018, Messi is the first captain of Barcelona.
Busquets is for the third year in a row the ‘stand-in’ of the attacker. This also seems to guarantee the future of the inspector at Barça, just like that of co-routineer Piqué. Spanish media expect a more important role for Frenkie de Jong next season, as a result of which the position of Busquets was somewhat under pressure.
