Teun Koopmeiners plays a different role at Atalanta than he was used to at AZ. The midfielder is now expected more often on half of the opponent, while in Alkmaar he had to send other players there.
Gian Piero Gasperini, Atalanta‘s trainer, came up with a clear message for Koopmeiners. “He wants me to score often as a midfielder and play forward to help the team,” he says during Rondo at Ziggo Sport. “I come a lot more box to box now, much more in the front.”
That differs enormously from his role at AZ, where he was the playmaker. “Now, as a midfielder, I am moving more in depth and at AZ I played in width, from left to right. Now I’m commuting back and forth. It‘s fun to learn a different role.”
Koopmeiners is fine, because he is doing well in Serie A. He was already able to make his appearance in sixteen games, eleven of them as a base player, and scored two goals.
