FC Barcelona will have to make every effort to make it to the final of the Copa del Rey. Ronald Koemans team is 2-0 behind after the first semi-final with Seville: Jules Koundé and Ivan Rakitic made the difference in Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán on Wednesday.
Barcelona was particularly defensively battered: in the absence of fit rightbacks Júnior Firpo had to change flank, while the inexperienced Óscar Mingueza was in the back of Samuel Umtiti. In the opening phase, both teams got one good chance: however, Lionel Messi found goalkeeper Bono on his way and Koundé shot on the other side.
However, the French defender had the taste and tried again a little later: and successfully. Koundé started the attack himself from his own half, reached the enemy sixteen meters, slipped past compatriot Umtiti and Marc-André ter Segen: 1-0. Barça had to recover from the fright in the remaining twenty minutes of the first half and saw the damage almost even greater. Ter Schegen, however, paraded a stake by Sergio Escudero.

Barça started with the best intentions in the second half and became dangerous again via Frenkie de Jong and especially Messi: goalkeeper Bono came out again as the winner. The well-organized Sevilla — with Karim Rekik, Nemanja Gudelj and Luuk de Jong as invaders — held up and even counted to 2-0 just before time. Rakitic escaped his old club and did not cheer after having passed the ball past Ter Segen.
It also stayed at 2-0: Messi tried it with a free kick, but Bono prevented Barça from taking the crucial goal from Seville with a flashy save. The return in Camp Nou will be played on Wednesday 3 March: it will be clear who will meet Athletic Bilbao or Levante in the final.
