La Palma airport closed again due to volcanic ash

La Palma International Airport closed again yesterday. The reason is an increase in the amount of volcanic ash that hangs like a cloud above the Canary Island.

At

least twenty domestic flights have been cancelled due to the activity of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, reports the Spanish airport company Aena. How long the airport stays closed is not known. Airports in the other Canary Islands remain open.

The volcano has been operating since September 19. Since then, more than 1450 buildings have been completely destroyed. An area the size of 1400 football fields is covered by a meter-thick layer of lava. More than 7000 people have had to leave their homes. Last week, a first person was killed due to the volcanic eruption.

Last Friday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sรกnchez paid another visit to La Palma. He promised more support to restore the economy and infrastructure.
