He provided hundreds, maybe thousands of memes. But the American Senator Bernie Sanders refuses to be ashamed of his striking attire during the inauguration of Joe Biden as President of the United States.
The funny Internet pictures flew Sanders around the ears. Not crazy, too. He was with a bunch of woolen mittens and thick winter coat, of the type suitable for a mountain walk, at the ceremony.
In this way, Sanders stood out sharply against other guests, such as Michelle Obama, who was crowned unofficial fashion queen of the event.
Sanders, however, keeps foot. “In Vermont we dress warmly. We know something about cold, and we don‘t care about fashion.”
“ We just want to keep ourselves warm. That’s what I did today,” Sanders told CBS presenter Gayle King, who replied: “Mission succeeded.”
According to social media users, Sanders‘s outfit was so horribly simple that it quickly became cult. A manhunt for the mittens started. There is a real Twitter account.
Unfortunately for those interested: the mittens are not for sale. The teacher she hand-crafted with woolen sweaters, linen and a fleece cardigan says they’re one-of-a-kind. “They are unique. I don‘t have them for sale anymore.”
She does sell many other mittens with all kinds of patterns. They’re flying out of the store. “But I‘ll never be able to make six thousand mittens. Every time I open my mail, I see hundreds of new requests,” says the woman who does the work in the evenings. She continues to work small-scale. “I’m a teacher and a mother. That keeps me busy.”
