The lawyer of the anti-corruption movement FBK of Russian opposition leader Aleksey Navalny has been detained by the security forces, his colleagues report. Ivan Pavlov defends the FBK in a case where the organisation is accused of extremism.
Pavlov specialises in treason and espionage as a lawyer. According to his colleagues, he is accused of releasing classified information regarding an ongoing investigation. When convicted, a sentence is sentenced to a maximum of three months.
Pavlov lives in Saint Petersburg, but according to TASS press agency, was apprehended at a hotel in Moscow. The lawyer was still in Moscow on Thursday, because a prosecutor has requested that the FBK be labelled as an extremist group and banned. Pending the judgment, the court restricted the activities of the FBK.
The case was dealt with behind closed doors because, according to the authorities, it contains classified information. Pavlov spoke to journalists outside the courthouse after Thursdays session.
