Lewis Hamilton is missing Sunday in the Grand Prix of Sakhir, the second race on the circuit in Bahrain. The Mercedes World Champion has been tested positively on corona, reports the organisation behind Formula 1, the FIA.
The Brit has been quarantined. Hamilton is the third rider in Formula One to have tested positive for coronavirus. Previously, this happened to the Mexican Sergio Pérez and the Canadian Lance Stroll.
“ He woke up on Monday with mild symptoms and at the same time heard that someone with whom he had had contact before he left for Bahrain last week had been tested positively,” explained his racing stable Mercedes. Hamilton also underwent a test with a positive result. “That was subsequently confirmed with another test,” says Mercedes.
Mercedes reports that Hamilton is still feeling well.
Hamilton won the Grand Prix of Bahrain on Sunday, for Max Verstappen. His seventh world title won the British in Turkey earlier. There are two more grands prix.
Formula One organization stated that Hamilton had been tested three times in the last week, as required by the protocol around a race weekend. Every time, the last time on Sunday, the result would have been negative.
Mercedes will announce as soon as possible who will replace Hamilton for the upcoming grand prix. Testers at the racing stable are the Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne and the Mexican Esteban Gutiérrez.
