LIVE Kuipers: very wise to extend curfew

Even now that vaccination has begun, the coronavirus blown over from China continues to cause worldwide disruption. Infections and hospital figures are not yet extreme in the Netherlands, but the mutants are concerned. The British variant holds a lot of house on the island and also the Brazilian and South African are approaching. At the same time, economy and society are sighing under suffocating measures. Follow the latest coronan news in this live blog.

President Ernst Kuipers of the National Network Acute Care (LNAZ) is in favour of extending the curfew after 10 February. According to him, this is “very sensible” because of the increase in the number of coronavirus infections with the British variant.

“ Its a very complex situation,” explains Kuipers in the Op1 programme. “People see that too: infections are going down, the number of patients with Covid in hospitals is slowly decreasing. But at the same time, we see that the British variant takes the upper hand very quickly.”

According to Kuipers, this shows that “with the current set of measures” it is not actually possible to stop the advance of the British variant. He advocates to vaccinate as soon as possible and to “keep the number of infections at a low level for as long as possible.”
