Tens of thousands of Spaniards demonstrated on Sunday in Madrid against Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez‘s intention to release Catalan separatists early.
Opposition leader Pablo Casado of the Conservative People’s Party (PP) called Sanchez “not to put Spain‘s unity on sale.” The leader of the far-right Vox party, Santiago Abascal, was also present.
Sanchez runs a minority government and relies on Catalan separatists to get his plans through parliament. He announced that the twelve politicians who have received up to thirteen years in jail for their role in the Catalan Independence Referendum in 2017 early release and resolve the matter.
How that should be done is unclear, as the convicts want to establish their own state. The population of Catalonia, Spain’s richest region, is divided. About half is in favour of secession from Spain.
