The man who punched French President Macron in the face on Tuesday has to go to jail for four months. Also, the 28-year-old man is given a 14-month probation sentence, the court ruled today,
Damien Tarel stated that he beat out of dissatisfaction and on a whim. “I think Macron very clearly represents the demise of our country,” he said in court.
According to the prosecution, Tarel‘s action was “absolutely unacceptable” and “an act of deliberate violence”. The man was finally convicted of assaulting an official.
In his interrogation Tarel declared to be a conservative-right sympathizer of the Yellow Vests. A few days before Macron’s working visit to the municipality of Tain-l‘Hermitage, near Lyon, Tarel was already considering making a political statement. For example, by throwing an egg or whipped cream cake at the president, the man declared against the state’s office.
He was, according to his own words, surprised when the President, on the day of the visit, went straight towards him. “When I saw his sympathetic and lying look, I was filled with disgust,” said Tarel, according to the newspaper Le Figaro. Then, according to his own words, he “instinctively” slapped the President.
As can be seen in this video:
Macron spoke of an isolated incident afterwards. He also called hatred and violence an enemy of democracy.
According to the prosecutor, Tarel is not a member of any political or militant movement. He is unemployed and lives in the commune of Saint-Vallier, south of Lyon. The 28-year-old would be a member of a martial arts association.
Apart from Tarel, a second man from Saint-Vallier was arrested on the day of the assault. The two would be friends of each other.
On the search of the second man’s house, weapons were found. As well as the book Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler and a communist red flag. This suspect will be charged with illegal possession of weapons.
