Manchester United is well on the way to the highest achievable in this Premier League season: Champions League placement. Leicester Manchester City already seems to be an unbridgeable lead, but townsman Manchester United reported next to number two Leicester City on Sunday night: Newcastle United took 3-1 on Old Trafford.
Donny van de Beek had to retry because of an injury. The team of trainer Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had difficulty getting started: the first chance was for the guests from Newcastle, but Joelinton met goalkeeper David De Gea. After half an hour of play, the match was opened by Manchester United. Marcus Rashford started an individual action on the left and surprised goalkeeper Karl Darlow in the short corner.
However, the Magpies showed character and quickly returned to equal heights: Allan Saint-Maximin forced De Gea to rescue and shot the 1-1 from the next corner. Manchester United could start over again and had to be patient after rest. After less than an hour, however, the 2-1 fell. Daniel James was remarkably free in the busy penalty area and the ball worked cool past Darlow.
Fifteen minutes before the game finally entered the slot. Manchester United was punished and Bruno Fernandes was allowed to do what he likes to do from 11 meters: 3-1. The Red Devils — like Leicester City — reach 49 points and have a six-point margin in place five.
