Marianne Vos climbs to stage win in Giro Rosa

Marianne Vos won the third stage of the Giro Rosa. The 33-year-old from Brabant was the strongest on the steep climb to the finish in Assisi. Vos already won her 26th stage victory in the Tour of Italy for women.

The last 700 metres of the stage went steep uphill along the city wall of Assisi. The CCC team of Vos, triple winner of the Giro Rosa, took the initiative in the final and the leading lady finished well. The last part of the climb was so steep that some riders almost came to a standstill. After passing the finish line they were quickly pushed away by stewards towards a flat stretch of road.

Annemiek van Vleuten, who had seized power on Saturday by winning the second stage with an impressive solo over the gravel strips known from Strade Bianche, kept the lead in the general classification. The world champion finished fifth, just ahead of Anna van der Breggen. The stage covered 142.2 kilometres. The Giro Rosa has nine stages and ends on Saturday.
