Cyclocross: De Knegt ‘certainly satisfied’ with Dutch performances at European Championships

18.29: Eli Iserbyt won the European title in Rosmalen. The 23-year-old Belgian drove to the gold for his compatriot Michael Vanthourenhout. Lars van der Haar took the bronze.

For Iserbyt, it is the first European title among the elite. Last year the rider from West Flanders was second behind Mathieu van der Poel. The Dutch reigning world champion, who also won the European Championship the last three times, was missing in Rosmalen. Iserbyt was previously European champion in the promises (2017) and in the juniors (2014).

For Van der Haar it is his third medal at the European Championships. He took the title in the first EK competition for elite in 2015 and grabbed the silver behind Van der Poel in 2017.

โ€œOverall, I am certainly satisfied. I think we have performed almost to the maximum,โ€ said national coach Gerben de Knegt. โ€œAt Puck Pieterse, I had taken into account a podium spot, but that she wins surprised me. She is a freshman promise with the ladies, handsome that she will do that,โ€ said De Knegt, who looked back on beautiful competitions. โ€œOften you end up in a tactical jousting game at a European Championships or World Championships. Although it was a quick round, everyone has raced freely. I am in favour of that.โ€

The time differences on a fast track are small, so it is important to make few mistakes. โ€œThat‘s what you saw with Lars van der Haar,โ€ said the national coach. โ€œIf he had had a good start, he might have been able to drive for profit, now a third place was the highest possible.โ€

Among the riders under 23 years of age, the Belgians were missing in Rosmalen. โ€œWe win there with Ryan Kamp. That was the best winner we could have for that raceโ€, found De Knegt. โ€œHe is also the world champion and not for nothing. There was no discussion about how he got that title thrown into the lap because others were not there.โ€

Swimming: promotion president of the Dutch federation in European administration

18.23 p.m.: Chairman Marius van Zeijts of the KNZB has made a promotion within the board of the European federation LEN. The 62-year-old Van Zeijts becomes one of the Vice-Presidents. He has been a member of the LEN board since 2018.

โ€œ As Vice President, you are at the wheel. Apart from that, it is of course a great honour for me personally that I am considered fit for this important role in the board,โ€ says Van Zeijts, who hopes that next week three Dutch will also be re-elected to various LEN committees. โ€œIn this way, we have a real influence on policies and decisions that are especially important to our top athletes and officials.โ€

During the online congress of the European Union, the KNZB chairman was re-elected to the board for a period of four years. Paolo Barelli begins his third period as the supreme boss of the European Federation. In the presidential election, the Italian received significantly more votes than his French challenger Gilles Sezionale (86-13). For the first time, the LEN also has two women as Vice-President, Pia Holmen and Tรผnde Szabรณ.

Mir was already the ninth driver who won a race in the king class of motorsport this season. The rider of Suzuki was finally rewarded in Valencia for his constant performance this year. After the start, he dived into the wheel of his compatriot Alex Rins (Suzuki) and lurked around for a flaw from the leader in the race. At about ten laps before the end, Rins gave that hole and Mir struck. The Spaniard then stood until the finish.

The Frenchman Fabio Quartararo dropped off in the title battle. The driver of Yamaha crashed in the beginning of the race. He managed to get back on his bike, but there was no more than fourteenth place in it.

Brennauer had taken over the lead from sprintster Wiebes after the second day. The German was the best in the individual time trial Saturday for the Italian Elisa Longo Borghini and Ellen van Dijk. Wiebes had won the first ride in the sprint on Friday.

The ride in Madrid was coloured by seven intermediate sprints where bonification scores were to be earned. This is where a battle between Brennauer and Wiebes developed, but Longo Borghini also grabbed three times the most seconds with a solo and approached the German rankings. With 13 kilometers to go, the Italian was taken back and the peloton was ready for a mass print. Wiebes was the first to enter into this, but was just overtaken by Balsamo.

Brennauer left 12 seconds at Longo Borghini and 13 seconds at Wiebes. Van Dijk became fourth and Annemiek van Vleuten sixth. For the German, it is the second time she won the race in Spain after her victory last year.

The Hungarian came in the final round still close to Pieterse, but could not get to the wheel anymore. She finished second at 8 seconds. Bakker came in right back there.
