Lionel Messi expects Karim Benzema to be his successor. The Argentine star sees the Real Madrid attack leader as the dead dyed favourite for winning the Ballon dOr.
“I think theres no doubt about it,” Messi tells TyC Sports. “Clearly, he had a spectacular year winning the Champions League. He has been a decisive factor in all matches. I think there are no doubts about this year.” Benzema became the top scorer of the Champions League with fifteen goals. In addition to the billion-dollar ball, he also won La Liga with Real.
Messi himself had a difficult debut season with Paris Saint-Germain, but he slowly finds his place in France. The 34-year-old forward is not thinking about stopping yet and puts the 2026 World Cup as a dot on the horizon. “Will I go through that? Why not. Ive reconsidered a decision to quit before. But to be honest, I do think about that tournament.”
Messi insists that nothing changes as fast as the football industry. “I also thought I would never play anywhere other than Barcelona and from one moment to another I was forced to leave. Anything can happen. Getting 2026 as an international will be difficult, but I certainly dont rule it out.”
