On the fourth day of the Autumn Series, Michael van Gerwen was eliminated early. Mighty Mike suffered a downright whitewash in the third round: a 6-0 defeat, against South African Devon Petersen.
Van Gerwen came no further than an average of 90.1, against the 101.3 of Petersen.
In the first round Van Gerwen handed out a whitewash to Benito Big Ben van der Pas. In the second round Ted Evetts also had to go 6-2, but Mighty Mike found his Waterloo with the South African.
He did win the floor tournament in Niedernhausen, Germany on Monday, after winning seven consecutive games. That also earned him another 10,000 British pounds.
Earlier in August, Van Gerwen also won two tournaments in the Summer Series, another five-day event belonging to the Players Championship series. The 128 participants will play twice more on Tuesday and Wednesday in Germany for a final victory and a cheque of 10,000 British Pounds.
The worlds number one player is experiencing a volatile phase in his career. For example, he was recently completely unexpectedly eliminated from the Premier League as a defending champion and had previously experienced a premature elimination at the major tournament World Matchplay.
