Migrants drowned again off Tunisian coast

The Tunisian Coast Guard took 21 bodies out of the sea after a boat with migrants had been turned over. The bodies were found near the port town of Sfax yesterday. Further information is still missing.

Its the second similar incident in two days. On Saturday, at least 43 migrants drowned off the coast of Tunisia after their ship was capsified. They left Libya to Italy. 84 sailed were rescued.

In summer, more migrants are trying to cross from North Africa to Europe. The Tunisian Coast Guard says it has prevented ten “migration operations” in recent days and saved 158 people.

Over the past twenty years, hundreds of thousands of people have made the dangerous crossing, fleeing poverty or violence in Africa and the Middle East. Many try to reach Italy from Libya.

Fewer boat migrants have arrived in Italy in recent years, but their numbers have increased again this year. According to Italy, nearly 20,000 migrants have already reached Italy this year through the Mediterranean. At this time last year, there were only 6700.
