Mike van Duinen signs with Excelsior: ‘Of course this is special’

Mike van Duinen returns to Excelsior. The thirty-year-old attacker signs a three-season contract in Kralingen. Between 2016 and 2018, he also played for the club.
Earlier this week, Van Duinen had his contract with OFI Crete dissolved, which means that he will work transfer-free at Excelsior. It is precisely his brother Niels van Duinen who brings him back as technical manager of the Rotterdammers.
โ€œMike has been in the club‘s interest for a long time,โ€ Niels responds. โ€œLast season, he trained for a short time in preparation to maintain his fitness and Excelsior wanted to capture him at the time, but Mike opted for a foreign adventure in Greece. When I came in here, he was already on the coaching staff list. Of course, this is a special transfer for us as brothers, but we can both deal with it in a business way. For me personally, only Excelsior’s interest applies.โ€
Van Duinen should serve as an alternative to striker Reda Kharchouch in the team of trainer Marinus Dijkhuizen. In addition, it can also be used on the outside. Van Duinen left Excelsior to PEC Zwolle in 2018, after which he chose Crete last summer. โ€œWe were still looking for someone with character and experience in every line. After Yassin (Ayoub, ed.) in midfield, Mike also fits perfectly into that picture, also because he can handle multiple positions,โ€ says his brother. โ€œMoreover, he not only has experience at the highest level, but he also knows the club well because he has played here before. With his qualities and experience, he can be of great value to Excelsior in the Premier League.โ€
Excelsior is currently taking the wind. The Kralingers took six points in their first two matches.
