Minsk police arrest protesters on Lukashenko’s birthday

At a demonstration in the Belarusian capital Minsk, some people were arrested by the police. Exactly how many people were arrested and why this happened is not clear. Thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets again to protest against incumbent president Lukashenko, who is celebrating his 66th birthday today.

The demonstrators are on their way to Independence Square in the city centre, which is barricaded. There are hundreds of policemen. Several subway stations are closed.

This video shows how the riot police randomly pick demonstrators from the street and put them in vans:

Yesterday thousands of women protested against the president. There was no major confrontation with the police, but an unknown number of demonstrators were arrested.

Among other things, the demonstrators want political prisoners to be released and new elections to be held. Three weeks ago, President Lukashenko was declared the winner of the presidential elections. He is accused of fraud.
