Mount schlemiel at Wembley: Liverpool wins FA Cup after great penalty series

Liverpool won the FA Cup on Saturday night. The Reds beat Chelsea after a delightful penalty kicking series. Kostas Tsimikas took advantage of the decisive penalty and keeps Liverpool‘s quadruple dream alive.
Liverpool shot out of the starting blocks at Wembley. Within ten minutes, Jürgen Klopp’
s team could have been on a big lead, but Chelsea survived the first storm. After a chance for Marcos Alonso on the other side, the game went down slightly and the game was more balanced. Before the break, Liverpool had to deal with a setback: Mohamed Salah sat down on the field injured and could not continue. The Egyptian was replaced by Diogo Jota.

What Liverpool did in the opening minutes of the first act did Chelsea thin over in the second half. Christian Pulisic and Alonso had the first hit of the match closely in the first five minutes after the break, but both just didn‘t find it. The same Alonso saw a beautifully taken free kick burst on the bar just after.
At the end of the official playing time, Luis Díaz was close to getting Liverpool the win twice, but the Colombian hit the outside of Édouard Mendy’
s pole and body. Hakim Ziyech entered the lines in the final phase and saw that there was no more scoring, adding another half hour of playing time.
Virgil van Dijk did not return to the battlefield in the extension. The Dutch international seemed to go to the side with injury symptoms and was replaced by Joël Matip. The pace was no longer nearly as high in the extension as during the official playing time, although both teams were still able to note a number of possibilities. There was no more scoring, which meant it came to penalties.

Alonso laid first in the penalty series on behalf of Chelsea and did not fail. James Milner did the same on behalf of Liverpool and shot his penalty kick flawlessly. Blues captain César Azpilicueta was the third penalty shooter and hit the post. After a kind of panenka by Thiago and an exploited penalty by Reece James, it was Roberto Firmino‘s turn and he also scored from the dot. A mirror from Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley was succeeded by a exploited penalty kick from Trent Alexander-Arnold, which put Liverpool on match point.
Jorginho was the fifth man in line at Chelsea and he didn’
t fail either. Sadio Mané was able to finish the job for Liverpool, but failed against his compatriot Mendy. Unlike Mané, Hakim Ziyech remained frosty calm and put Chelsea ahead. That pressure was spent on Jota, because the Portuguese took advantage of his penalty. Mason Mount missed the eighth Chelsea penalty, leaving Liverpool at match point again. Twice proved to be the right to fly: Kostas Tsimikas gave Liverpool the FA Cup.
