Steven Berghuis blamed himself for the defeat of Feyenoord at Ajax (1-0). “We forgot to reward ourselves. In that I also miss two great opportunities that simply need to be put in. So I hate that,” said the captain of the Rotterdam people.
Ajax started better and reached midfielder Ryan Gravenberch halfway through the first half. “In the beginning, we had ourselves pressed backwards. After that, we threw off the trepidation. At some point we moved on, sometimes with all the risks involved,” said Berghuis.
“ Definitely the second half we did well. We didn‘t let Ajax get into their power at all. We should have rewarded ourselves. That shot from Leroy Fer was fantastic by André Onana.”
Besides Fer, Berghuis was twice close to a goal. “Those two of mine went half a meter, or maybe a little less far, next to. The first chance I thought was the biggest. In the second I wasn’t sure whether Mark Diemers would make a switch or not. Then you just need to react quickly.”
as Berghuis is concerned, Feyenoord could have played football forward earlier, with a little more guts. “We agreed to collapse compact. Then you‘ll see that you’re coming back further and further. We let it go a little bit, actually, and came loose more and more. Then you just go. That worked out much better.”
