Georginio Wijnaldum will play in Italy next season. Paris Saint-Germain leases the 31-year-old midfielder to AS Roma until the summer of 2023. An option to buy is included in the deal.
Roma and PSG have confirmed the rental transfer. Wijnaldum, who had no perspective after a failed debut season in Paris and also lost his permanent spot at the Orange, makes the switch to the capital of Italy at the intercession of trainer José Mourinho.
After this season, Wijnaldum can finally make the switch to Rome. It is reported that the option to buy is worth around eight million euros. The option is automatically activated when Wijnaldum plays half of all league matches at Roma or when the club qualifies for the Champions League.
Wijnaldum went through the youth school of Sparta and Feyenoord, broke through in De Kuip and later played for PSV. After a stint at Newcastle United, the routine earned his stripes as a valued force at Liverpool. Last year, he switched to PSG transfer-free.
With his move to Italy, Wijnaldum hopes to be in the spotlight again with national coach Louis van Gaal. With Conference League winner Roma, he can form a midfield with Nemanja Matic, who has recently also played at the Stadio Olimpico.
