Much needed victory for Van Gerwen in Premier League, play-offs still achievable

In the penultimate round of the Premier League on Friday night it was all or nothing for darter Michael van Gerwen. He took on Gary Anderson and had to win to keep a place in the last four, which will play in the semifinals in London in October

Van Gerwen was aware of his task and drew the longest end: 6-8.

Van Gerwen, who won the last four editions of the event and was also the strongest in 2013, had already lost six of the fourteen games during this Premier League and on Thursday suffered his biggest defeat ever in the tournament. He lost 8-1 to Peter Wright.

Despite the victory over Anderson on Friday evening, Van Gerwen is still fifth in the standings.

That means that everything comes to the very last round of play, Saturday. Then Van Gerwen will take on Daryl Gurney (8th), while direct rival Nathan Aspinall will have a tough match against frontrunner Peter Wright.
