From next year, municipalities will be allowed to lower the parking rates for electric cars and hydrogen-powered cars. The cabinet is going to amend the Municipal Act for this.
The discount will apply to cars and vans that do not emit any exhaust gases at all, so hybrid cars are excluded. This includes discounts on paid parking spaces and car parks and on parking permits.
“This gives municipalities an extra tool in their toolbox to work on clean air and reduce traffic noise in their city or village,” says Heijnen Secretary of State of Infrastructure and Water Management.
Whether municipalities choose to do this and where those discounts apply in the municipalities, the municipal council determines. Of the nine million passenger cars in the Netherlands, 300,000 are now completely emission-free. This is expected to be two million by 2030.
