Netflix wins bidding contest secret film Zendaya

After a fierce bidding battle, Netflix took off with the streaming rights of Malcolm & Marie, the film that John David Washington and Zendaya secretly shot this summer.

The idea for the film was born during a phone call Zendaya had with Sam Levinson, who is also behind her HBO series Euphoria. The filming of the second season of that show was stopped because of the coronavirus, and the two brainstormed about a project they could realize.

That became Malcolm & Marie, which they recorded at the end of June with a small team, including the directors wife, producer Ashley Levinson, in compliance with all the corona rules in California. The makers chose not to inform almost anyone about the production. According to Deadline, HBO, Amazon, MGM and Apple, among others, were also seriously interested in the film, but Netflix, with 30 million dollars, was prepared to pay the highest amount.

Malcolm & Marie is about a couple coming back from a film premiere and talking about their previous relationships. This degenerates into a discussion that puts their relationship at risk. As far as we know, only Washington and Zendaya are shown in the film.
