EA decided to delay the release of the next Need for Speed until 2022. The series will take a three-year break for the first time, but the developers from Criterion will have something to do – they have to help DICE with the release of Battlefield 6. The publisher quite easily made the decision, because this year Codemasters will release a new race (it seems only the next F1), and Need for Speed can be safely postponed for a year – with neither NFS, neither Battlefield has a problem, just because of the DICE pandemic, more help was needed.
As EAs head of internal studios Laura Mili notes, Criterion is perfectly familiar with DICE and has helped the Swedish studio more than once. Upon completion of Battlefield 6, the studio will return to Need for Speed, which will be released on both the PS5 and Xbox Series, as well as on PS4 and Xbox One.
Moving Need for Speed will also help Codemasters products — otherwise racing would start to compete among themselves, which EA does not want to allow. Mili also notes that NFS do not plan to give Codemasters – it has enough of its series.
