The women of the Dutch Team will have to compete in the European Championship qualification game with Russia on September 18, without captain and record international Sherida Spitse. The midfielder will not be released by her Norwegian club Vålerenga.
Because of the coronavirus, FIFA, in consultation with UEFA, has stipulated that clubs may refuse invitations if players are subject to compulsory quarantine for more than five days on their return.
In Norway, the rule is that residents visiting a non-Schengen country must be quarantined for ten days on their return.
All other internationals play in countries where an exception is made for athletes. They therefore do not have to be quarantined. After the game against the Russians, the Dutch will return to Zeist for a training placement. There, Spitse joins.
The Netherlands is currently the unbeaten leader in the European Championship qualification with eighteen points from six matches, followed by Russia with nine points from four matches.
