Nyck de Vries made his first meters in a Formula One car on Tuesday. During the Young Drivers‘ test in Abu Dhabi, the Dutchman was allowed to step into the Mercedes car of Lewis Hamilton.
“ It was very special to make my F1 debut,” says a frenzied De Vries afterwards. “What an incredible car, really from another planet.”
The 25-year-old driver from Sneek was champion in Formula 2 last year, but soon noticed on Tuesday that an F1 car is completely different. “You can brake so late and take so much speed into the corners. It was a real pleasure to drive this car.”
De Vries is familiar with Mercedes. For the German car manufacturer, he has been active in Formula E, the electric counterpart of
Formula 1 since this year. “I am very satisfied with the progress during the day,” De Vries looked back on his 110 rounds. ,, I felt very comfortable in the car, also thanks to the support of the team.”
Only two-time World Champion (2005 and 2006) Fernando Alonso was faster than De Vries. The Spaniard returns to the king class next year at Renault and was able to get used to his car on Tuesday – although he is actually too experienced to take part in the test – to get used to his car.
