Michael Matthews does not have to serve out his contract with Team Sunweb and may leave the team after this season. The Australian doesn’t agree with Sunweb’s strategy to rely on several riders in the finals of the classics and the sprint stages. “That tactic doesn’t fit my ambitions”, Matthews said.
Sunweb sent out that news earlier on Sunday. A few hours later it became known that Matthews has signed a contract until 2022 with the Australian Michelton-Scott. The team he previously drove for between 2013 and 2016. Matthews came to Sunweb in 2017 and won two stages and the points jersey in the Tour de France. Last week he won the Brittany Classic.
Matthews’ departure is another setback for Sunweb. The team has seen several leaders leave in recent years. In addition to Tom Dumoulin, Warren Barguil, John Degenkolb and Marcel Kittel, Wilco Kelderman (BORA-Hansgrohe) and Sam Oomen (Jumbo-Visma) have also left in recent months.
Romain Bardet has been recruited as the new leader. The Frenchman of AG2R will join the ranks next season.
