Max Verstappen clocked the third time at the second free practice towards the Grand Prix of Tuscany. On the circuit of Mugello only the Mercedesses of Valtteri Bottas (1st) and Lewis Hamilton (2nd) were faster. Verstapsens teammate at Red Bull, Alexander Albon scored the fourth fastest time.
Bottas sharpened the track record in the second session to 1.16,989. Reigning world champion Hamilton conceded two tenths to his Finnish team mate in the second session, Verstappen was 0.246 seconds slower.
“Overall it was a good day. I think we can be quite satisfied with the way the car behaved. We weren’t too far from Mercedes, so that’s a good thing. We can still improve the car’s balance,” said Verstappen, who added that the tyres held up better than he had expected.
The free practice came to a temporary halt twice. Only after Lando Norris crashed with his McLaren. The front wing of his car broke off. Norris continued with the scare and said he was okay. After the McLaren was towed away, the practice session could continue again.
Later the practice session had to be interrupted again. This was because the cars of Sergio Perez (Racing Point) and Kimi Räikkönen (Alfa Romeo) touched each other and as a result debris got on the track. This time the delay was shorter and the driver was able to use another quarter of an hour of their free practice.
First free practice
The Formula 1 Circus has settled on the Mugello circuit for the first time. Verstappen experienced a pleasant introduction in the first free practice session. The 22-year old Limburger clocked the second fastest time in his RB16. Only Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas was faster.
Verstappen doesn’t have good memories of last weekend, when the race also took place in Italy. At the Monza circuit he dropped out in the race with engine problems. The Red Bull driver would like to rectify something on Sunday at the circuit of Mugello.
