Sebastian Vettel did not seem to be driving for the Racing Point team next year, which will then continue under the name of Aston Martin. Team boss Otmar Szafnauer said the four-time world champion had never even been in the picture, but after the departure of driver Sergio Pérez the door may be ajar.
Sznafnauer said in an interview with Auto, Motor und Sport that he never spoke to Vettel. His statement is striking, because Vettel did confirm earlier that he had spoken to the ‘pink team’. The German is waving off at Ferrari after this season.
At Racing Point, Lance Stroll – son of team owner Lawrence Stroll – has an ongoing contract. Pérez, despite his ongoing commitment, has announced his farewell. “Everything in life has a beginning and an end and after seven years together my time with this team has come”, writes the Mexican in a statement. “I cherish all the beautiful moments, the friendships and the good feeling that I have always given everything. I wish the team all the best, also in the future,” he refers to the ‘Aston Martin project’.
“I don’t have a plan B”, Pérez continues. “It is my intention to continue racing here, but that depends on whether I can find a project that motivates me to give 100% every lap”
Pérez will finish the season at Racing Point. “I hope I can give you some good news soon. But for now let’s enjoy the upcoming races together”
