‘Orange has a chance to win World Cup title’

Bert van Marwijk finds it telling that Matthijs de Ligt must fear for his base position in the Dutch team. The former national coach believes that, just like in 2010, the Orange has the weapons to win the World Cup.
Against Belgium, Louis van Gaal chose Jurriën Timber, which led De Ligt to take his seat on the bench. ‘The Ligt is a top defender, who will soon become the new leader and captain of Juventus if he stays in Turin. If it ends up on the bench during the World Cup, which I don’t hope but what could just happen, it says something about the strength of the Dutch team, ‘says Van Marwijk in his column in De Cceit.
Van Marwijk sees that Van Gaal has to choose. ‘
No matter what, big names are going to end up in the bank. When I look at this Orange, I also see a team that has the chance to become world champion. In history, the Netherlands has proven so many times that we can win from top countries and at the moment most of our base team are playing in the top of Europe. You see what happens when Frenkie de Jong and Steven Bergwijn come into the field.
This Orange is a team with weapons‘, says Van Marwijk. “We have creativity, speed, physical strength and length in addition to the experience of playing in the top of European club football. Then it makes sense for the coach to say that he’s going for the first spot with this team. In 2010, at my presentation to the group, I also immediately said that I was going to the World Cup to become a world champion. You don‘t always have to take the pressure off, for players it’s better that they feel the pressure.
‘The trick is not to go over the edge and we sometimes have a hand of that in the Netherlands. Then we call ourselves the favourite for the World Cup, ‘concludes Van Marwijk, who led the Netherlands to World Cup Silver in 2010.
