Otters in an aquarium in Atlanta, Georgia, have been tested positively for the coronavirus, reports the zoo. “They began to show mild respiratory symptoms, including sneezing, runny nose, lack of energy and coughing,” announced the Georgia Aquarium in a press release, adding that the animals “are expected to fully recover.”
The animals remain out of sight of the public for the time being and receive good (medical) care according to the report. How many animals are sick is not disclosed. Tonya Clauss, Vice President of the aquariums Animal Health Service, said that the otters are “closely monitored” and show only mild symptoms.
The otters would have contracted the infection through an infected staff member who had no symptoms of his own. According to the aquarium, the animals do not have direct contact with visitors.
