‘Out of favor Umtiti can pursue career with French subtopper’

Samuel Umtiti may be able to revive his career at Stade Rennes. The French subtopper is in talks with FC Barcelona to take over the defender on rent.
This is reported by several French media, including RMC Sport and LEquipe. Umtiti played just 90 minutes for the Catalan club this past season and sees many players appear in the pecking order before him. Trainer Xavi Hernández prefers Eric Garcia, Gerard Piqué, Ronald Araujó, Clément Lenglet or Oscar Mingueza instead of the Frenchman, making a possible departure negotiable.
The 28-year-old defender would like to play again and is open to leaving for France. With the sale of Nayef Aguerd to West Ham United, Rennes must strengthen itself and sees Umtiti as the ideal successor. A permanent switch does not seem likely yet: Umtiti extended his contract with Barça in January until 2026.
