In and around Thialf we said goodbye to Lara van Ruijven (27) on Wednesday evening. Friends, fans and teammates gave their last greeting to the deceased short track star.
She was transported with a hearse to the ice stadium. There the car made a lap over the ice where Van Ruijven trained for years.
Van Ruijven was very popular among her colleagues. The reigning world champion at 500 metres died on 10 July in a hospital in Perpignan from an autoimmune reaction, which led to serious complications, including internal bleeding.
Van Ruijven spent two weeks in hospital in the south of France. During that uncertain time, the rest of the short track team stayed in Font-Romeu, where the team of national coach Jeroen Otter and Van Ruijven had started a training camp.
After the death of the Dutch, it rained reactions from home and abroad. With an emotional tribute on Instagram, the international shorttrack world remembered the death of PanterLara, as she was called standard by her teammates.
