Play Spitse uncertain, Folkertsma back for European Championship game with Russia

National coach Sarina Wiegman has reinstated Sisca Folkertsma in the selection for the European Championship qualification match with Russia after a long period of injury. It is not yet certain if Sherida Spitse can be present at the game, next Friday in Moscow.

The 23-year-old Folkertsma has not been selected since the Algarve Cup, early last year. FC Twente’s midfielder suffered a torn crossbar in a league game with Ajax in March 2019 and missed out on the World Cup.

Spitse is insecure because she has not been released yet by her Norwegian club Valerenga. In Norway there is a mandatory quarantine period of ten days upon return from Russia. UEFA has determined that clubs may refuse to release players for international matches because of the corona crisis.

Keeper Loes Geurts is missing from the selection because she suffered a concussion. She will be replaced by FC Twente goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar.

The Dutch, title defender and the number two of the World Cup in 2019, can hardly miss participation in the European Championships. With eighteen runs from six games, the Dutch women are leading in Group A.

The European Championship in England was to be played next year, but due to all the shifts on the sports calendar, it has been moved by one year to the summer of 2022.
