Plísková and Kvitová effortlessly through at US Open, also Kerber round further on

Angelique Kerber reached the second round of the US Open in New York thanks to a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Australian Tomljanovic. Karolína Plísková and Petra Kvitová also won their matches in two sets.

The field of participants in the grand slam tournament was considerably reduced due to the corona virus. Seven of the world‘s top ten players are missing, including Kiki Bertens. German Angelique Kerber, the winner of 2016, is present and had to compete against Australian Tomljanovic in the first round.

The tennis players had difficulty finding their rhythm in the empty colossal Louis Armstrong Stadium. Both handed in their first two serveings. Triple grandsam winner Kerber broke the number 59 of the world at 4-4 for the third time and ran in set two rap to 5-2. Tomljanovic still struggled, but there was no turnaround.

Plísková dictates party

The losing finalist in 2016 was Karolína Plísková, who took on Angelina Kalinina in the first round this year. The number 145 of the world had little chance against Czech Plísková. It was 6-4, 6-0.

The 28-year-old Plísková is the number three in the world, but after cancellations by Ashleigh Barty (1) and Simona Halep (2) she was placed first in New York.

Plísková let Kalinina take some of the reins and lost a 4-1 lead in the first set. From 4-4 she was back on track and won the last eight games with conviction. The Ukrainian Kalinina, who played her second grand slam tournament, scored only ten points.

Kvitová continues without any problems

The number six of the world, Petra Kvitová, took on the Romanian Irina Begu in the first round. The number 73 of the world lost 6-3, 6-2 to Kvitová,

The Czech, who reached the quarter-finals twice in New York, started the tournament strongly. Concentrated, she beat 23 winners past Begu. When Kvitová served for the match, she hit her first double fault. Moments later, the loot was in for Wimbledon’s double winner.
