After a long summer break, podcast The Day returns to a world where the Taliban suddenly fails to say in Afghanistan. Contrary to their reign of terror of the 90s, they now want to rule with a milder hand, they say themselves, and women are allowed to go to school and work, for example. But whether that really is the case is highly questioned. “A plan isn‘t there yet and internally the Taliban is very divided, says Afghanistan expert Martine van Bijlert in the podcast.
Van Bijlert lived in the heyday of the previous Taliban regime as a relief worker in Afghanistan and saw up close how the radical Islamic movement intervened in the lives of Afghans. The fear is that history is repeating, but times have changed. The question now is: are the Taliban?
