Pope Francis made a mistake in an interview when he talked about Afghanistan and the role the West played there. He thought he would quote the “wise” German Chancellor Merkel, but instead he used a statement by Russian President Putin.
The Pope praised Merkel in an interview with a Spanish radio station as one of the greatest figures in international politics before quoting the quote he attributed to the Chancellor. But Putin said that during his meeting with Merkel last month in Moscow. He then criticized some countries‘ “irresponsible” policies to impose “values on others.” He also made attempts to impose a certain democracy on another country without taking into account, for example, history and religion there and “completely ignoring traditions.”
It was Francis’s first interview (84) since his discharge from the hospital. He had surgery on his colon in July.
