Kees Kwakman is clear: in Stefan de Vrij he sees the best defender at the European Championships so far. At the moment, Kwakman even estimates him slightly higher than Matthijs de Ligt, although that is another type of defender. Mark van Rijswijk is particularly surprised at the steps De Vrij has taken.
Kwakman does not have to think long when asked the question of who is the best defender at the European Championships so far. “That can only be one central defender, right? The Free. I think that‘s such a top defender. When you see him, you think he’s not that strong, it‘s not that fast… But he can do anything. He’s doing everything right,” he says at the table at ESPN Football Talk.
At the moment, Kwakman De Vrij finds stronger than his colleague in the Orange-backguard, De Liga. “I find him more stable now, but De Ligt comes back from injury. It‘s a bit more robust and missed more often, De Vrij is a bit more thoughtless. But as a duo, it fits well together.”
ESPN reporter Van Rijswijk joins Kwakman and is amazed at the steps De Vrij has taken. “It’s what Ronaldo has, at a different level than De Vrij. If you see how much he does for it… Let‘s face it: great defender when he was at Feyenoord. But one of the best defenders in the world and the best defender of Serie A. Nobody saw that in him.”
Who was the best central defender to date at this European Championship? 🤔 “He’s living proof that how much you invest in yourself, it all comes out again” pic.twitter.com/dxpyltxrwp
