Sri Lankas president, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, has fled, reports the BBC. On Saturday, furious protesters stormed his residence. Since then, he had gone into hiding.
In Sri Lanka, things have been restless for ages and there are frequent large anti-government demonstrations. The protesters hold the government accountable for the deep economic crisis in which the country is in and have long demanded its departure. There is a major shortage of food, fuel and medicines, among others. Inflation is also skyrocketing, resulting in a historically large budget deficit.
Not only the president has fled, according to the BBC. His brother, Minister Basil Rajapaksa of Finance, is said to have fled the country. Prime Minister Wickremesinghe is also expected to leave Sri Lanka, according to the British broadcaster.
