Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski says his country has again been ahead of NATO membership. “NATO leaders have confirmed Ukraine will join the alliance,” he wrote on Twitter. “The Membership Action Plan is an integral part of that process.”
Zelenski had seized the NATO summit in Brussels to reassure his countrys desire to join the alliance. Ukraine is overwhelming with neighbouring Russia and seeking support in the West. The Ukrainian had said earlier on Monday that he wanted to hear from US President Joe Biden a clear “yes or no” on whether his country had a view of a Membership Action Plan.
Such a plan is intended to prepare candidate countries for accession. Ukrainian news agency UNIAN writes that NATO has now once again agreed that membership was promised in 2008.
