Pride dominates at Jumbo-Visma, but team is wary of Pogacar

Of course he is proud, Tom Dumoulin. He and his teammates from Jumbo-Visma checked the last 80km of a tough mountain stage in the Tour de France, where none of the other teams were able to change the hierarchy for a single moment.

On the final climb, the Grand Colombier, he himself did kilometres of headwork in the service of watchman Primoz Roglic. I was good, says a relieved Dumoulin. Ive had quite a difficult week, it really hasnt been a party every day. Fortunately it went well today

However, Tadej Pogacar, the main challenger of Roglic, took off with the days victory. Thats a pity, but a slur, Dumoulin wondered. Primoz wanted to go for the stage win, but it is quite difficult to win a stage. He went on at six hundred metres himself, maybe he shouldnt have done that afterwards, but thats afterwards

Great team seen

Team leader Grischa Niermann was very satisfied after the strong performance of his riders. It feels a bit like a defeat if Primoz cant finish it, but I think we can be very proud of the teams performance

Click here for the final phase of the stage:

Roglic is not very happy with his second place. I would have preferred to have won those four seconds, but Pogacar was a bit better. I am happy with how the day went

Didnt feel like attacking

Pogacar may have won the stage in front of his compatriot and thus won four bonification seconds, but in the general classification he still admits forty seconds. There was no more time gain, he says, the pace of the Jumbo-Visma train was simply too high. They were really well prepared, it made no sense for me to attack

Watch the reactions of Pogacar and Roglic here:

At the foot of the 17 kilometre long final climb Roglic was surrounded by five teammates, a luxury position for which he is grateful to the whole team.

The team did a great job. The boys flew today, chapeau for everything and everyone. Until now we are doing really great. Cycling is not an individual sport, for top performance you need a strong team around you

Dumoulin on his guard

Although Pogacar wasnt able to ride off Roglic, Dumoulin is far from sure of the yellow for his team mate the day before the second rest day in Paris. It looks good. We had a lot of self-confidence, but still Pogacar turns out to be just a little too strong

We have to be on our guard in the third week, because it can just turn around. We have to be wary of that

Niermann, too, knows that nothing has been won yet. Its going to be very exciting, there will be two very tough mountain stages and a time trial to La Planche des Belles Filles. We are far from there yet, but as a team we are in very good shape.

The man in the yellow jersey must have a very strong team around him in order not to be attacked left and right. After today we can say that we are the strongest team in the match
