British Prince Andrew says that his mother Queen Elizabeth has felt a huge void in her life since her husband, Prince Philip, died last Friday at the age of 99. He also said that the whole family is experiencing a very great sense of loss.
“ The way I see it, we actually lost the grandfather of our nation,” said Elizabeth and Philips second son to journalists after a church service in Windsor.
61-year-old Andrew rarely appears in public. In 2019, he resigned his royal duties indefinitely after a much-discussed interview about his friendly ties with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Teacher, supporter and critic
Princess Anne, the only daughter of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, also responded for the first time to the death of her father. “You know its gonna happen, but youre never quite ready.” The 70-year-old princess says her father was her teacher, supporter and critic. He was also someone who took everything out of life and always served himself, she says. “I want to follow that example in particular.”
Princess Anne took over several duties from her father when she retired in 2017. She says to consider that “an honor and privilege”.
Prince Charles responded to the death of his father yesterday, saying that over the past seventy years his father has “done the most remarkable, dedicated service to the Queen, to my family, to the country and also to the whole Commonwealth”.
Hundreds of British people travelled again today to Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, despite the request to avoid the residences as much as possible due to the corona measures. The royal family called for donation to charity, or to sign a condolence register online. Against the gates of Buckingham Palace there is a large sea of flowers since Friday.
Prince Philips funeral is next Saturday, April 17. Due to the measures, it becomes a small-scale family ceremony. Philip doesnt get a state funeral at his own request. According to the BBC, he wanted a funeral with little frills.
