Prison threatens to force hungry Navalny to eat

The Russian prison where Aleksey Navalny is being held threatens to end the opposition leaders hunger strike by forcing him to eat. Thats what Navalnys team reports.

The 44-year-old Navalny went on a hunger strike at the end of March because he would not receive the appropriate care for his back and leg problems in prison. His health, according to his lawyers, is rapidly deteriorating. Navalny wants to be examined by a doctor of his choice, but that is not allowed.

According to his team, Navalny has lost 8 kilos since the start of his hunger strike. In total, he would have lightened 15 kilos since his imprisonment in a penal colony about 100 kilometres from Moscow.

The critic of the Kremlin was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison in February.

The court ruled that he had violated the terms of his parole in a fraud case with his stay in Germany, where Navalny was treated for poisoning. According to him, it would have been the work of the Kremlin.
