Probably 50 deaths from collapse of gold mine in Congo

50 people probably died when a gold mine collapsed in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. That happened after heavy rainfall.

According to a spokesman for a local mining NGO, there were 50 young miners in the shaft of the mine in Kamituga when it collapsed. “Nobody could get out.”

Fatal mining accidents are a regular occurrence in Congo. Last year 36 people died in a copper mine in the province of Lualaba and last week a landslide cost the lives of three miners in the province of Kasonga.
